The reggae drum set is basically a compact mix of modern drums, African (or Afro-Cuban) drums, and percussion elements. Although beat 1 of reggae music can be played, it generally is not the most prominent beat, and many times drummers emphasize different beats, for example, beat 2 or 3, in order to avoid the 1 beat.

We used two snare drums simultaneously for many of these drum loops. This gives you that signature reggae reverb on the snare fill accents and a dry punchy snare for the main rhythms.

To get that ‘reverbed’ snare tone we tuned the snare drum to a high note and then removed the snares on the underside of the drum altogether. This gives it that almost ‘timbale’ like sound that is so characteristic of classic reggae. We used a vintage Lexicon reverb on those snare fills and left the rest of the drum kit completely dry.
These live acoustic beats and fills were fed through all manner of vintage and modern analogue gear. These included Drawmer tube compressors and Focusrite EQ’s. We added some subtle tape saturation for a nice, evenly compressed tone. With side stick, rim shots and highly tuned snares, these classic reggae rhythms should add realism and vitality to your productions.
