The Test of Word Reading Efficiency (TOWRE) is a reliable measure of word reading accuracy and fluency. Because it can be administered very quickly, the test provides an efficient means of monitoring the growth of two kinds of word reading skills that are critical in the development of overall reading ability: the ability to accurately recognize familiar words as whole units or 'sight words' and the ability to 'sound out' words quickly.

  1. The Test of Word Reading Efficiency (TOWRE) is a measure of an individual’s ability to pronounce printed words accurately and fluently. The test measures both the ability to sound out words quickly and accurately and the ability to recognize familiar words as whole units or sight words.

The purpose of the current study was to determine whether the basic word reading skills measured by the Test of Word Reading Efficiency, 2nd Edition (TOWRE-2) provides sufficient information to diagnose dyslexia instead of using both the TOWRE-2 and Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, 3rd Edition (WIAT-III) as is current practice.
  3. Things are even worse if we consider reading efficiency as well as speed. Reading efficiency is reading speed weighted by comprehension rate and it amounts to 200 x 60% or 120 efficient words per minute (ewpm) for the average reader and to 1000 x 85% or 850 ewpm for top readers. Thus, an efficiency ratio of seven divides these two categories.

The TOWRE contains two subtests:
• The Sight Word Efficiency (SWE) subtest assesses the number of real printed words that can be accurately identified within 45 seconds
• The Phonetic Decoding Efficiency (PDE) subtest measures the number of pronounceable printed nonwords that can be accurately decoded within 45 seconds.

Each subtest has two forms (Forms A and B) that are of equivalent difficulty, and either one or both forms of each subtest may be given depending upon the purposes of the assessment. Percentiles, standard scores, and age and grade equivalents are provided.
